Foot Care

We choose to trim our goats feet every 6-8 weeks on average. Some of our goats feet grow slowly and they go longer with out being trimmed, others grow quickly and need to be done sooner. Most fall into the 6 - 8 weeks.

When triming, the most important thing is to not trim too short and hit the quick. If you do their foot ill bleed an the will be very sore on that foot. If you do get the quick its best to wash the hoof off with betadine solution and then apply an antiseptic spray and monitor for a few days.

Picture below show how the hoof should be at the end. There are also heaps of youtube videos about goat hoof trimming. We choose to trim our goats feet in out milking stand, but they can be done on the ground too. The milking stand makes it a lot easier on both the goat and us. The stand bring them up to a better height, they get food and cant move around so much. Our goat have been stand trained to enjoy being there. the first few times they just get food and attention. Now they happily stand there whilst we trim feet, milk or pamper them.

Our Milking stand is from Mini-lee Miniature goats. They make them really good and we recommend them. Find them on Facebook!
